During the 17th Session of the Assembly of States Parties held in The Hague, Japan announced a voluntary contribution over €50,000 to the Trust Fund for Victims (TFV) at the International Criminal Court (ICC). This contribution was received on 11 January 2019, which is earmarked to support survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
“Victims of crimes under the jurisdiction of the ICC have a right to a remedy for the harms they suffered. As in previous years, Japan’s contribution will help the TFV to support survivors of sexual violence and their families on their path of healing and recovery so that they can successfully rebuild their lives.”
H.E Sheikh Mohammed Belal, Board member of the Trust Fund for Victims and Ambassador of Bangladesh to the Kingdom of the Netherlands
The Government of Japan is one of the long standing supporters to the TFV and has contributed over €800,000 to the Trust Fund for Victims since 2014, in which more than €600,000 has been earmarked to support survivors of SGBV projects.
In 2002, the TFV was established under the Rome Statute, in order to support recovery and resilience for victims of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression.
The mission of the TFV is to respond to the harm resulting from the crimes within the jurisdiction of the ICC by ensuring the rights of victims and their families through the provision of reparation and assistance programmes for them to return to a dignified and contributory life within their communities.
