On 4 December 2018, the government of the Netherlands announced a contribution of €1 million in 2018 to the Trust Fund for Victims, during a high-level event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Rome Statute. Additionally, the Netherlands also committed €200,000 in 2019 and in 2020.
“We are extremely grateful for the significant contribution from the government of the Netherlands, which contains unprecedented earmarking to the Lubanga reparations awards and for assistance to victims of conflict in the Central African Republic (CAR). The Netherlands contribution is a significant boost towards making reparative justice for victims a reality. I hope this encourages and inspires other States to follow this example.”
- - Pieter de Baan, TFV Executive Director
Within the Netherlands contribution, €350,000 is earmarked to the Lubanga reparations programme to benefit former child soldiers eligible to receive reparations in the case, as well as €250,000 for the forthcoming assistance programme in CAR which the TFV decided to accelerate following the ICC acquittal of Mr Bemba in June 2018.
The government of the Netherlands also contributed €800,000 for a multi-year unrestricted funding from 2018 – 2020, of which 400,000 is provided in 2018. This enables the TFV to ensure continuity of activities under its reparations and assistance programming, delivering reparative justice to victims of crimes under the jurisdiction of the ICC.
The government of the Netherlands has contributed over €2.5 million to the Trust Fund for Victims since 2006.
